   A double ring of walls with fifty-two towers, restored from 1853 by Viollet-le-Duc, who put northern slate cones on the towers where the region used tile — a decision France has argued about ever since. It became World Heritage in 1997 and holds about fifty residents.

   Châteaux de Lastours

   Four so-called Cathar castles on a rock ridge above the village of Lastours in Aude in France. They stand isolated between the deep valleys of the Orbiel and the Grésillou, built along a wall of rock four hundred metres long and fifty wide at three hundred metres above sea level.

   A so-called Cathar castle at Pieusse near Limoux in Aude in France. It was a genuine Cathar castle, never taken by the French crown at the time of the annexation of the Roussillon, and is marked by a keep massive for its date.
