   Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg

   A castle on a rock spur of the Vosges at 757 metres above the Rhine plain, ruined in the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt between 1900 and 1908 on the orders of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The reconstruction is itself now the historical interest as much as the medieval fabric.

   Unterlinden Museum

   A museum in Colmar occupying a thirteenth-century Dominican convent and a public baths of 1906, joined by an extension of 2015. It holds Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece, painted around 1515 for a hospital of plague victims.

   Alsatian Vineyard Route

   The oldest wine road in France, opened in 1953 and running some 170 kilometres from Marlenheim down to Thann along the foot of the Vosges. It threads more than a hundred villages of half-timbered houses, with Colmar about halfway along.

   St Martin's Church, Colmar

   A Gothic collegiate church of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in the middle of Colmar's old town. Locals call it the cathedral, though it never had a bishop; its tiled roof and stork's nest are the town's emblem.

   Château de Saint-Ulrich

   A ruined castle above Ribeauvillé, the largest of three on that ridge, built from the twelfth century by the lords of Ribeaupierre who controlled the valley. Its knights' hall with nine Romanesque windows survives.

   Château de Dagsbourg

   A ruined castle at Eguisheim, one of the three that stand together on the ridge above the village, listed as a historical monument since 1840. Its tower and fragments of wall remain among the vineyards.

   Minster Breisach

   The minster of St Stephen on the rock above the Rhine, Romanesque at its east end and Gothic to the west. Martin Schongauer painted the Last Judgment across the west wall about 1490, and the carved high altar, by the master known only as HL, was finished in 1526.

    Synagogue de Colmar

    A synagogue of 1843 in the old town, built in a Romanesque revival manner with a domed tower, unusual for a French synagogue of its day. It came through the Occupation as a store room and serves the Jewish community of Colmar still.
