   City of Space

   A space centre opened in 1997 with a full-size Ariane 5 standing outside and a real Mir training module you can walk through, along with a planetarium. Toulouse builds most of Europe's satellites, which is why it is here.

   Basilica of St. Sernin

   The largest Romanesque church still standing in Europe, built from 1080 as a stage on the pilgrim road to Santiago and to hold the relics of the city's first bishop. Its five-stage octagonal tower is the model for a dozen others in the region.

   Aeroscopia

   An aerospace museum at Blagnac beside the Airbus factories, opened in 2015, whose two Concordes are the point — one of them a prototype. A Super Guppy transport and an A300, the first Airbus, stand beside them.

   Muséum de Toulouse

   The natural history museum, founded in 1865 with two and a half million specimens and reopened in 2008 after a rethink — its displays now argue about classification and extinction rather than simply presenting cases of animals.

   Toulouse Cathedral

   A cathedral whose two halves do not line up: a thirteenth-century nave was built at an angle to the older choir and the join was never resolved, so the building has a visible kink in the middle of it.

   Musée des Augustins

   The fine arts museum, in a fourteenth-century Augustinian convent, whose Romanesque sculpture is the best collection of its kind anywhere — capitals and cloister carvings rescued from Toulouse churches demolished in the nineteenth century.

   Notre-Dame de la Daurade

   A basilica whose origins go back to 410, when a temple to Apollo on the site was converted for Christian use. Its black Virgin is dressed in different colours through the liturgical year and Toulouse brides still bring bouquets to it.

   L'Envol des pionniers

   A museum on the old Montaudran airfield about the Aéropostale mail service, which flew from Toulouse to Dakar and across the South Atlantic in the 1920s. Saint-Exupéry, Mermoz and Guillaumet flew from this field, and their kit is here.

   Musée Saint-Raymond

   The archaeological museum, opened in 1892 in a sixteenth-century university building beside Saint-Sernin, on ground that had been a cemetery, a hospital, a prison and a barracks in turn. Its Roman portrait busts from the villa at Chiragan are its strength.

    Monastery of the Jacobins

    A Dominican church of the fourteenth century in brick, whose single row of columns down the middle carries a vault of twenty-two ribs from one shaft — the palm tree, the most celebrated piece of Gothic in southern France. Thomas Aquinas's bones are under the altar.

   Les Abattoirs

   A modern and contemporary art museum in the city's former slaughterhouse, holding some three thousand works. Its single most remarkable object is a stage curtain twelve metres wide painted by Picasso in 1936 for a Romain Rolland play.

   Notre-Dame du Taur

   A brick church on the rue du Taur, between the Capitole and the basilica of Saint-Sernin, named for the bull that is said to have dragged the martyred Saint Saturnin to his death on this spot. Its flat bell-wall facade is a landmark of southern Gothic, listed since 1840.

   Toulouse Aerospace

   An aerospace and embedded systems campus being built at Montaudran in Toulouse. Toulouse Métropole is developing forty hectares on the site of the old Toulouse-Montaudran aerodrome, where the Aéropostale mail service began, and the runway has been kept as a public promenade.

   Jardin des Plantes, Toulouse

   Seven hectares of public park and botanical garden laid out in the nineteenth century on the site of a Carthusian estate, joined to two neighbouring gardens so that the whole makes a green corridor through the city.

   A business district north of the centre beside the Canal du Midi, holding company headquarters and several of the grandes écoles. It was built from the 1970s on the site of an arsenal and is where much of Toulouse's aerospace administration sits.

   Bazacle

   A weir and mill site on the Garonne, whose milling company was formed in 1372 by dividing ownership into transferable shares — which has led it to be called the oldest joint-stock company in the world. A hydroelectric station and a fish pass occupy it now.

   Georges Labit Museum

   An archaeological museum founded in 1893 by a Toulouse collector who travelled the world buying art, in a small Moorish-style villa. It covers East Asia and ancient Egypt, and it is the oldest Asian art museum in France after the Guimet.

   Maison Seilhan

   A historic house in Toulouse, handed to Saint Dominic on 25 April 1215 and regarded as the place where the Dominican order began. The deed of transfer survives in the French national archives, and the room in which the first friars gathered is shown.

    Augustinian convent

    A former convent in Toulouse, founded outside the walls in 1286 and moved to its present site between 1310 and 1341. It ceased to function as a convent in 1790 and now houses the city's fine arts museum, with the Romanesque and Gothic sculpture displayed in the cloister.
