   Vilamoura

   A resort built from the 1970s around the largest marina in Portugal, and one corner of the Algarve's golden triangle. Digging the foundations turned up a Roman villa with mosaic floors, which was left in place and can be visited between the hotels.

   Cathedral of Faro

   The Catholic cathedral of Faro, dedicated to the Virgin by the archbishop of Braga in the late thirteenth century. By order of King John III it replaced Silves as the seat of the diocese of Faro from 1540.

   Roman Ruins of Estoi

   The remains of a Roman villa at Estói near Faro in Portugal, a national monument. It is the best preserved Roman site in the Algarve, with baths, a temple, a mausoleum and production buildings.

   A church at Almancil in Loulé in the Algarve. It is known for an interior in which the walls and vaults are entirely covered in blue azulejos.

   Capela dos Ossos

   A bone chapel attached to an eighteenth-century Carmelite church at Faro in Portugal. Its four-by-six-metre space is built from the bones of a thousand Carmelite friars and it was consecrated in 1816; the inscription over the door tells the visitor to stop and consider that they too will come to this place.

   Castle of Loulé

   A castle at Loulé in the Algarve in Portugal. It was made a national monument on 20 June 1924, and three towers stand within its walls.

   A beach at Albufeira in the Algarve in Portugal. It lies thirteen kilometres east of the town and received Blue Flag certification in 2012.

   Palácio de Estói

   A palace near the village of Estói outside Faro in the Algarve. Its decoration mixes baroque, rococo, neoclassical and romantic elements, which makes it one of the principal monuments of the region; part of it now operates as a hotel.

    Arco da Vila

    A national monument in Faro, Portugal, and one of the city's two emblems. It was raised on the site of a medieval gate at the wish of Bishop Francisco Gomes do Avelar and consecrated in 1812.
