   Viseu Cathedral

   The cathedral of Viseu, begun in the twelfth century and much rebuilt. Its vault is the great thing: knotted stone ribs in the Manueline manner, carved as ropes with knots, the most spectacular ceiling of its kind in Portugal. A Renaissance cloister adjoins it.
