   Luiz I Bridge

   A double-deck iron arch bridge of 1886 by Téophile Seyrig, who had been Eiffel's partner, spanning the Douro in a single arc of a hundred and seventy-two metres. The upper deck now carries the metro and pedestrians at the height of the cathedral terrace.

   Porto Cathedral

   A twelfth-century cathedral built like a fortress, with crenellations and a rose window between two square towers. Prince Henry the Navigator was baptised in it, and its Gothic cloister is lined with eighteenth-century blue tiles.

   Ponte de D. Maria Pia

   A railway bridge of 1877 built by Eiffel's company, whose single wrought-iron arch of a hundred and sixty metres was then the longest span in the world. It carried trains until 1991 and now stands beside its replacement, disused and listed.

   Palácio da Bolsa

   The commercial association's palace, begun in 1842 on the ruins of a Franciscan convent, whose Arab Room took eighteen years and some eighteen kilograms of gold leaf. It was built to impress foreign merchants and it still does.

   Church of São Francisco

   A Gothic Franciscan church whose interior was covered in the eighteenth century with carved and gilded woodwork — something like three hundred kilograms of gold leaf over vines, birds and cherubs. Beneath it is an ossuary with a glass floor over the bones.

   Church of Saint Ildefonso

   A church of 1739 near Batalha square whose front and flanks are covered with about eleven thousand blue and white tiles, laid in 1932 with scenes from the life of its patron. It is the standard first photograph anyone takes in Porto.

   Clérigos Church

   A baroque church of 1763 by the Italian Nicolau Nasoni, whose bell tower rises seventy-five metres and is climbed by two hundred and forty steps. From the top the whole city, the river and the port lodges opposite are laid out.

   Igreja de Santa Clara

   A church begun in 1416 for Poor Clares whose plain Gothic shell was filled in the eighteenth century with gilded woodcarving of the most extreme kind — every surface worked, in the manner Porto took further than anywhere else in Portugal.

   National Museum Soares dos Reis

   Portugal's first national museum, founded in 1833 and housed in the Carrancas palace, where Wellington and later the French general Soult both quartered themselves. It is named after the sculptor whose work is its core, and it covers Portuguese art broadly.

    Portus Cale

    The Roman-era port at the mouth of the Douro, whose name is the origin of the word Portugal — the county that grew round it gave its name to the kingdom and then the country. The site straddles modern Porto and Gaia.

   A brewing company with its headquarters at Leça do Balio in Matosinhos in the Porto conurbation. Founded in 1890, it became Unicer in 1977 and took its present name in November 2017 from its leading beer, Super Bock.

   Ribeira Square

   The riverside square at the heart of old Porto, opening onto the Douro quay beneath tall arcaded houses. Rebuilt after a fire in 1491 and given its fountain in the 18th century, it sits inside the historic centre that UNESCO listed in 1996.

   Kadoorie Synagogue

   A synagogue completed in 1938 in art deco, the largest in the Iberian peninsula, funded by the Kadoorie family of Hong Kong and driven by an army officer who had rediscovered crypto-Jewish communities in the Portuguese interior. Its Hebrew name means source of life.

   Rotunda da Boavista

   A large circular square at Boavista in Porto in Portugal. It was made at the end of the 1700s and renamed Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque in 1903; a tall column of the early twentieth century commemorating the Peninsular War stands at its centre.

   Episcopal Palace, Porto

   The bishops' palace on the height beside the cathedral, rebuilt in the mid-eighteenth century in late baroque with a facade of enormous length. It dominates the skyline from the river and is now used for exhibitions.

   Fort of São Francisco do Queijo

   A small fort on the rocks at the sea's edge north of the city, built in the 1660s to guard the coast, and known to everyone as the cheese castle after the shape of the boulder it stands on. The Atlantic breaks over its outer wall in winter.
