   Argentino Lake

   The largest freshwater lake in Argentina at 1,415 square kilometres, fed by the glaciers of the ice field and milky with rock flour. Boats cross it to reach the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers, which are reachable no other way.

   Sierra Baguales

   A range running sixty kilometres east to west at the southern end of the Andes. It is a spur of the main cordillera, lying along the Chile-Argentina border near Puerto Natales and Río Turbio.

   Laguna Los Escarchados

   A small lake in a hollow of the steppe east of El Calafate, protected as a reserve since 1979. The hooded grebe, unknown to science until it was found in Patagonia in the 1970s, breeds on waters like these, and the reserve was set aside on its account.

   Glaciarium

   A glacier interpretation centre outside El Calafate, built to explain the Southern Patagonian Ice Field before you go and see it. There is a bar in the basement built entirely of ice, which is exactly as touristic as it sounds and quite cold.

   Lake Roca

   A finger of Lago Argentino running south to the Chilean border inside Los Glaciares park, hemmed by beech forest and the ridge of Cerro Cristal. A trail climbs from its shore for a view over the water to the icefields beyond.
