   Salta Cathedral

   The cathedral of Salta, finished in 1882 in pink and cream with two towers. It holds the images of the Lord and the Virgin of the Miracle, which arrived from Spain in 1592 and are carried through the city each September before crowds of well over a hundred thousand.

   Basílica y Convento de San Francisco (Salta)

   A Franciscan church of ochre and blood red, its tower rising some 53 metres, the tallest church tower in Argentina. Built and rebuilt through the 18th and 19th centuries, it faces a small square in the middle of Salta.

   Museum of High Altitude Archaeology

   A museum in the historic centre of Salta preserving and displaying the material of the capacocha, the Inca child sacrifices on the high Andean peaks. Salta province created it to safeguard the mummies found on the summit of Llullaillaco in 1999, and it opened in 2004.

   Güemes monument

   A bronze of Martin Miguel de Guemes on horseback at the foot of the San Bernardo hill, unveiled in 1931. Guemes held the northern frontier with gaucho irregulars through the war of independence and died of a wound in 1821.
