Mbombela is the airport for Kruger, a park roughly the size of Wales and one of the very few in Africa where you can find the big five yourself, from your own car, on tarred roads.

The Blyde River Canyon runs north of it — red sandstone, a thousand metres deep, with the panorama route stopping at God's Window and the potholes at Bourke's Luck. Johannesburg is forty minutes by air.

    Lowveld National Botanical Garden

    One of South Africa's nine national botanical gardens, at the meeting of the Crocodile and Nels rivers outside Mbombela, with waterfalls in the gorge between them. Its cycad collection is among the most complete in Africa.
