   Fort Eben-Emael

   A Belgian fortress of 1935 between Liège and Maastricht, reckoned the strongest in Europe, taken in a single morning on 10 May 1940 by seventy-eight German glider troops using shaped charges. The tunnels, gun cupolas and the holes those charges cut are all open to visitors.

   Basilica of Saint Servatius

   A church over the grave of Servatius, the first bishop in the Low Countries, who died here about 384 — which makes this the oldest church in the Netherlands. Its treasury holds his silver reliquary bust, and a pilgrimage brings it out every seven years.

   Bonnefanten Museum

   A museum of old, modern and contemporary art in a building by Aldo Rossi of 1995 on the Maas, whose zinc-clad rocket-shaped dome has become the city's marker. Medieval Limburg sculpture downstairs and international contemporary art upstairs.

   Basilica of Our Lady

   A Romanesque church of about 1000 in the historic centre, dedicated to the Assumption and known locally as the Star of the Sea for the Marian devotion at its side chapel — where candles burn all day. Its westwork rises like a fortress wall over a small square.

   Hoge Kempen National Park

   The first national park in Flanders, in eastern Limburg between Genk and the Meuse valley, of pine forest, heath and flooded gravel pits. It sits on the ridge dividing the Meuse and Demer basins, and abandoned coal-mine spoil heaps are part of the landscape.

   Basilica of Our Lady

   The main church of Tongeren and former cathedral of a suppressed diocese, built on a Roman temple site and often called the oldest church in Belgium. Excavations under the floor show the Roman and Merovingian phases, and the treasury is one of the richest in the country.

   Kasteel Hoensbroek

   One of the largest castles in the Netherlands, at Hoensbroek near Heerlen, moated and built in stages from the fourteenth century. It was called the most stately stronghold between Rhine and Meuse, and about forty rooms are open as a museum.

   Gallo-Roman Museum

   An archaeology museum at Tongeren covering the region from the first hunters to the Merovingians, founded in 1954 and rehoused in 1994. It won the European Museum of the Year award in 2011 for a display built entirely around narrative rather than cases.

   Fortified Position of Liège

   A line of interwar Belgian fortifications around Liège, built to block the invasion corridor between Germany and France after the 1914 forts had held the Germans for a week. It was extended east to the Herve plateau; Eben-Emael was its northern anchor.

    Valkenburg Castle

    A ruined castle at Valkenburg aan de Geul, and the only hilltop castle in the Netherlands, first built in the twelfth century and blown up in 1672. Marl tunnels run under it, dug as an escape route and now shown on tours.

   Vrijthof

   Maastricht's great square, grown from a Roman and Frankish burial ground into the precinct of the Collegiate Church of Saint Servatius, and only in the 19th century the city's main public space. Museums, a theatre and a long rank of cafe terraces line it.

   Netherlands American Cemetery

   The only American war cemetery in the Netherlands, at Margraten ten kilometres east of Maastricht, holding 8,288 graves from the fighting of 1944-45. Every grave has been adopted by a Dutch family, a practice begun in 1945 and unbroken since — there is a waiting list.

   Wilhelminatoren

   A thirty-metre lookout tower on the Heunsberg above Valkenburg, designed by Christiaan Alfons Prevoo and raised in 1906 to survey the hills of South Limburg. A listed national monument, it collapsed without warning on the morning of 16 March 2025.

   Maastricht Natural History Museum

   The natural history museum of Maastricht, in a former convent in the Jekerkwartier, covering the geology and palaeontology of southern Limburg. Mosasaur fossils from the local marl — the animal that gave the Maastrichtian stage its name — are the core of it.

   Sint-Janskerk

   A Gothic church in the centre of Maastricht, standing shoulder to shoulder with the Catholic basilica of Saint Servatius on the Vrijthof — this one Protestant since 1632. Its red sandstone tower of seventy metres can be climbed.

   De Valkenier

   An amusement park at Valkenburg aan de Geul opened in 1934 as a natural swimming pool by Jan Albert Ottermans, and the oldest such park in the Benelux. Aimed at children under twelve, it closed after the 2022 season.

   Onze Lieve Vrouweplein

   A square in the historic centre south of the shopping streets, closed on one side by the Basilica of Our Lady and lined with café terraces under lime trees. It is where Maastricht sits outside, which in this city is most of the year.

   Wyck

   The neighbourhood on the east bank of the Maas within the historic centre, linked to the old town by the thirteenth-century Sint Servaasbrug. Its warehouses and merchant houses now hold the city's better shops and restaurants, and the station is at the top of the street.

   Munsterbilzen Abbey

   A Benedictine convent at Munsterbilzen in Belgian Limburg, founded about 670 by Saint Landrada, plundered by Vikings in 881 and rebuilt. It became a house of noble canonesses and was dissolved in 1798; fragments and the crypt survive.

    Fort de Liers

    One of twelve forts built around Liège between 1881 and 1884 to Henri Brialmont's design, on the north side of the ring. It fought in both world wars and its concrete works remain, unrestored, in farmland.
