   Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

   One of the great Dutch collections — Bosch, Bruegel, Rembrandt, and a strong surrealist holding — closed for renovation since 2019. Its Depot, opened alongside in 2021, is a mirrored bowl in which the entire storage is open to visitors, the first building of its kind anywhere.

   Nieuwe Kerk Delft

   The church in Delft holding the tomb of William of Orange and, beneath it, the vault of the House of Orange-Nassau, where Dutch monarchs are still buried. Its tower is a hundred and eight metres, the second tallest in the Netherlands.

   Euromast

   An observation tower of 1960 built for a horticultural exhibition, raised to a hundred and eighty-five metres in 1970 with a rotating capsule on a mast. There is a restaurant halfway up, and in summer you can abseil off it.

   Oude Kerk

   A Gothic church in Delft whose seventy-five-metre brick tower leans about two metres out of true, which is why the Dutch call it crooked John. Vermeer is buried in it, along with the microscopist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.

   Mevlana Mosque

   A mosque of 2001 in northwestern Rotterdam serving mainly Turkish-Dutch worshippers, named after the poet Rumi. It was voted the most beautiful building in Rotterdam in 2006, in a city that rarely agrees about architecture.

   Kunsthal

   Rem Koolhaas's exhibition hall of 1992 in the museum park, built as a set of ramps and floors that cross each other so that the route through it is never the same twice. It holds no collection; seven paintings were stolen from a loan exhibition here in 2012.

   Diergaarde Blijdorp

   One of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands, moved in 1940 to a new site laid out by Sybold van Ravesteyn, whose curved brick pavilions are listed monuments. It holds over five hundred species across thirty-four hectares arranged by world region.

   Prinsenhof

   A former convent in Delft that William of Orange used as his residence, and in which he was shot dead on the stairs in July 1584 — the first assassination of a head of state with a handgun. The bullet holes are still in the wall and are pointed out.

   Wereldmuseum Rotterdam

   An ethnographic museum on the Rotterdam waterfront, founded in 1883 from the collections of a merchant sailing society, and now working — like the Dutch ethnographic museums generally — through what its objects were doing there in the first place.

    Montevideo

    A residential tower of 2005 on the Maas, a hundred and forty metres high and the tallest residential building in the Netherlands when it opened. The eight-metre M logo on its roof turns in the wind, doubling as a weather vane.

   Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk

   The only medieval building left in central Rotterdam. The German bombing of May 1940 destroyed everything around it and gutted the church itself; the decision to rebuild it, taken against opposition, became the symbol of the city's reconstruction.

   The Destroyed City

   A bronze memorial sculpture in Rotterdam. It was erected in 1953 to commemorate the destruction of the medieval city centre by German bombing on 14 May 1940, and was listed as a national monument in 2010; the figure has a hole torn through its chest.

   A museum of human migration in the old Fenix warehouse in Rotterdam, opened on 16 May 2025. The building was the departure shed for the Holland America Line, from which millions left for the New World.

   Kop van Zuid

   A district on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas opposite the centre of Rotterdam, taking in the Wilhelminapier. It is a relatively young quarter, built on abandoned dockland.

   Grote Kerk, Dordrecht

   A Brabantine Gothic church built between 1284 and 1470 and the largest in Dordrecht, whose tower was left unfinished and capped with four clock faces instead of a spire. Two hundred and seventy-five steps climb it for the view over the river junction.

   The Hague Netherlands Temple

   A temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Zoetermeer near The Hague, dedicated in 2002 and the only one in the Netherlands. Only members go beyond the entrance hall; the grounds are open.

   An interpretation centre in Delft in the Netherlands devoted to the painter Johannes Vermeer and his contemporaries. It occupies a reconstruction of the old Guild of St Luke building and works with local archaeological and heritage bodies to present the Delft of Vermeer's day.
