Pereira sits in the middle of Colombia's coffee axis, whose farmed hillsides became World Heritage in 2011 for the way the crop shaped everything — the villages, the mule tracks, the jeeps.

Farms take guests and show the whole process from picking to cup. The Cocora valley grows wax palms sixty metres tall, the highest palms anywhere. Salento and Filandia are the painted villages between.

    Nevado del Ruiz

    A glacier-capped volcano whose eruption on 13 November 1985 melted the icecap and sent lahars down the valleys, burying the town of Armero and killing about 23,000 people — the worst volcanic disaster of the twentieth century after Pelée, and one that had been forecast.

    An andesitic stratovolcano in the Colombian department of Tolima. It stands south of Nevado del Ruiz inside Los Nevados National Park; its last major eruption was 3,600 years ago and its most recent activity in 1943.

    A national park in the central range of the Colombian Andes. It contains the glacier-capped Nevado del Ruiz, Nevado del Tolima and Nevado de Santa Isabel, the highest and most northerly active volcanoes in the country.
