   Maison Bonaparte

   The Bonaparte family house on Rue Saint-Charles, where Napoleon was born on 15 August 1769. Corsican partisans sacked it in 1793 and his mother had it restored with French compensation money; the family kept it until 1923 and it is furnished as they left it.

   Ajaccio Cathedral

   The cathedral of the diocese of Ajaccio, part of the archdiocese of Marseille. It is dedicated to the Virgin and built in a baroque and mannerist style; Napoleon was baptised in it.

   Musée Fesch

   The principal art museum of Corsica, in the Palais Fesch at Ajaccio. Cardinal Joseph Fesch, uncle of Napoleon I, founded it in the town of his birth, and its Italian primitives are the finest collection in France outside the Louvre.

   Citadelle d'Ajaccio

   A hexagonal fortress on the point beside Ajaccio harbour, begun by Genoa in 1492 and rebuilt in its present form from 1554. The French army held it until 2019, when part of it was opened to the public.

   A Genoese watchtower on the coast south of Ajaccio. It was built in the sixteenth century to watch for corsairs, and its cylindrical shaft widens at the base.

   A Genoese tower on a small island off Ajaccio, built in the sixteenth century. The island itself is a marine protected area.

   A Genoese tower on the coast north of Ajaccio. It was built in the sixteenth century and passed warning by fire signal to the towers on either side.

   Église Saint-Roch d'Ajaccio

   A neoclassical church on the Cours Napoleon, designed in 1885 by the Ajaccio architect Barthelemy Maglioli though not finished until 1923. It is dedicated to Roch, invoked against plague, and coloured marble lines the interior.

   Torra di a Castagna

   A Genoese tower on the coast northwest of Ajaccio. It was built in the sixteenth century, and its upper part has collapsed, leaving only the lower cylinder.

    Parata tower

    A Genoese tower built in 1608 at the tip of the peninsula west of Ajaccio. It guarded the Sanguinaires islands offshore and is one of the celebrated sunset points of Corsica.
