Alta lies at seventy degrees north, inside the belt where the aurora appears overhead rather than on the horizon. The Northern Lights Cathedral, a titanium spiral, opened in 2013.

The rock carvings at Hjemmeluft, cut between roughly 5000 and 500 BC, were listed as World Heritage in 1985. Sorrisniva rebuilds its ice hotel every winter. Come between late September and March.

    World Heritage Rock Art Centre - Alta Museum

    The museum for the Alta rock carvings, some six thousand figures cut into shoreline rock between 5000 and 2000 BC — boats, reindeer, bears, people. Boardwalks run past them, and it was Norway's first cultural World Heritage site, listed in 1985.
