   Urnes Stave Church

   A twelfth-century stave church above the Lustrafjord, and the oldest of the twenty-eight that survive. Carved panels from an earlier building of about 1070 were reused in its north wall — the interlaced beasts that gave their name to the Urnes style. World Heritage since 1979.

   Kaupanger Stave Church

   The largest stave church in western Norway, built about 1190 on the north shore of the Sognefjord and still the parish church of Kaupanger. Its interior is dark tarred pine on posts set clear of the ground.

   A runestone turned up by ploughing at the Eggja farm in Sogndal in Vestland, Norway, in 1917. It had been laid over a grave, and its inscription is among the most important in runic scholarship.
