   Arctic Cathedral

   A church of 1965 at Tromsdalen built as a series of eleven concrete triangles stepping down like a rack of drying fish or a glacier, depending on who is describing it. The east wall is a stained-glass window twenty-three metres high, added in 1972.

   Arctic-alpine Botanic Garden

   The northernmost botanical garden in the world, at Tromsø. It opened in 1994 and is run by the Tromsø University Museum, growing arctic and alpine plants outdoors without glass.

   Polaria

   The world's most northerly aquarium, opened in May 1998 with its displays built around Svalbard and the Barents Sea. A five-screen panoramic cinema, an Arctic walkway of polar exploration gear and tanks of local shore life surround the centrepiece, an open pool of bearded seals.
