Bariloche looks Alpine on purpose — stone and timber civic buildings from the 1930s, chocolate shops along Mitre street, and a lake with mountains behind it.

Nahuel Huapi, Argentina's first national park, was created around it in 1934. Cerro Catedral is the largest ski area in South America, and the Seven Lakes road runs north to San Martín in a day.

    Cathedral of Our Lady of Nahuel Huapi

    A Gothic cathedral of the 1940s in local stone and timber by Alejandro Bustillo, the architect who gave the whole town its Alpine look. It stands above the lake, and the mountains behind it are the reason the photograph works.
