Brunei is a small oil sultanate on the north coast of Borneo, and its capital is quiet, green and dry — no alcohol is sold anywhere in the country.

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque of 1958 stands in its own lagoon with a stone replica barge beside it. Kampong Ayer, the water village on stilts across the river, houses thousands and has done for centuries.

Istana Nurul Iman
The sultan's residence and the seat of government, and the largest residential palace in the world — about eighteen hundred rooms under gold-tiled domes. It opens to the public for three days at the end of Ramadan, when the sultan shakes hands with anyone who queues.

Brunei Museum
The largest national museum of Brunei, at Kota Batu in Bandar Seri Begawan. It holds Islamic art, Southeast Asian history from the sixteenth century, and archaeological and ethnographic displays, but has been closed for refurbishment since 2014 and has not reopened.
