   Singapore Botanic Gardens

   A tropical garden founded in 1859 and the only World Heritage site in Singapore, listed in 2015. Rubber seedlings raised here from 1888 seeded the plantations of Malaya, and the orchid garden holds the largest display of its kind anywhere.

   Gardens by the Bay

   A hundred and five hectares of reclaimed land opened in 2012, built around steel supertrees up to fifty metres high that collect rain and vent the conservatories. Two cooled domes hold a Mediterranean garden and a mountain cloud forest; the light show at night is free.

   Singapore Flyer

   Observation wheel in Singapore of 2008, 165 metres high. Its twenty-eight capsules were reversed in direction a month after opening on the advice of feng shui masters.

   Chinatown

   The old Chinese quarter around Outram, where a Hindu temple, a mosque and a Buddhist one stand within a few hundred metres of each other. The shophouses are restored and expensive; the hawker centres inside them are neither.

   Singapore Zoo

   A zoo of twenty-eight hectares opened in 1973 on a forested reservoir, built without bars — moats and vegetation do the containing, an approach copied widely since. Breakfast is served beside the orangutans.

   National Museum of Singapore

   The country's oldest museum, founded in 1849 and housed since 1887 in a domed neoclassical building. Its permanent galleries run through seven hundred years of the island's history, from the Malay port to the modern state.

   Little India

   The Tamil quarter north of the river, dense with temples, gold shops and garland stalls, and busiest at Deepavali when the streets are lit end to end. The Mustafa Centre in the middle of it never closes.

   Jurong Bird Park

   Aviary in Singapore, opened in 1971 and closed in 2023 when its five thousand birds moved to the new park at Mandai. It had the tallest indoor waterfall in the world.

   Masjid Sultan

   A mosque first built in 1824 for the sultan whose treaty with Raffles opened the island, and rebuilt in 1928 with the golden dome that marks Arab Street. The base of the dome is ringed with glass bottle ends, donated by poorer Muslims so that everyone had a part in it.

    Universal Studios Singapore is a compact park on Sentosa and the only Universal park in Southeast Asia. The Transformers ride is its flagship, and the whole circuit can be walked in a day.

   Tampines

   A new town in eastern Singapore, planned and built from the 1980s with housing and commerce together. The name comes from the tempinis trees that grew here, and its town centre is one of the busiest regional hubs on the island.

   The commercial heart of Singapore, taking in Raffles Place, Tanjong Pagar and the reclaimed ground at Marina Bay. It is where the towers are, and it empties on Sundays.

   The Istana

   The residence of the president, built in 1869 as Government House for the colonial governor and set in forty hectares of grounds. The gardens open to the public about five times a year, on public holidays.

   Merlion Park

   A park at the mouth of the Singapore river holding the eight-metre lion-fish statue adopted as the national emblem in 1964. It spouts into Marina Bay with the hotel towers behind, which is why the crowd is there before breakfast.

   Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum

   A four-storey temple in the Tang style holding a relic said to be a tooth of the Buddha, with a roof garden above. It anchors the Chinatown circuit and was completed in 2007.

   Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore

   The oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, founded in 1827 by a clerk who came with Raffles, and rebuilt in the Dravidian style with a tower of painted figures over the gate. Its fire-walking festival each autumn draws thousands, in the middle of Chinatown.

   ArtScience Museum

   A museum shaped like a lotus flower, opened in 2011 at Marina Bay Sands, whose petals collect rainwater and drop it through the centre of the building. Its long-running teamLab installation is what most visitors come for.

   Night Safari

   The world's first nocturnal zoo, opened at Mandai on 26 May 1994 at a cost of S$63 million. Its 35 hectares of secondary rainforest hold some 900 animals from over 100 species, seen from a tram loop and walking trails lit to resemble moonlight.

   St Andrew's Cathedral

   A white Gothic Revival cathedral of 1861 built by Indian convict labour. Its walls are finished in Madras chunam — shell lime mixed with egg white, sugar and coconut husk, then polished — which is why they hold that gloss in the tropics.

    East Coast Park

    A beach park running along the southeastern shore through Marine Parade, Bedok and southern Tampines. It opened in the 1970s on land reclaimed from the sea off Katong, and its cycle path, barbecue pits and seafood centres are where Singapore spends its weekends.
