   Landmark 81

   Landmark 81 is the tallest building in Vietnam at 461 metres. From the Skyview deck the bends of the Saigon river and the spread of the city can be taken in at once.

   Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica

   A cathedral built between 1877 and 1880 from bricks shipped out from Marseille, which have never needed painting. Its twin spires reach fifty-eight metres; it has been under scaffolding for a long restoration.

   Independence Palace

   The presidential palace of South Vietnam, rebuilt in the 1960s by a Vietnamese architect trained in Paris. A North Vietnamese tank came through its gate on 30 April 1975, ending the war; the interiors and the command bunker are untouched since.

   Cholon

   The Chinese quarter of Ho Chi Minh City, west of the centre, whose name means big market. Binh Tay market, herbal shops and the Thien Hau temple make it a different city from District 1.

   Bến Thành Market

   The central market of Saigon, in its present building since 1912, its clock tower one of the emblems of the city. Dry goods and souvenirs by day, food stalls in the streets around it after it closes.

   Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens

   The Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens, founded in 1865 and among the oldest zoos in the world. The history museum stands beside it, so the two are seen together.

   Museum of Ho Chi Minh City

   A museum in the former Gia Long Palace, built in the 1880s as a commercial museum and later used by South Vietnamese heads of state. Its basement tunnels were how the last president left in 1975.

   Suối Tiên Theme Park

   A theme park in the eastern suburbs built entirely around Vietnamese myth — dragons, a giant Buddha, a man-made beach with a wave machine, and a crocodile pool crossed on a footbridge. It is unlike any Western park and is aimed squarely at domestic visitors.

    Xá Lợi Pagoda

    The largest pagoda in the city, built in 1956 and the headquarters of Buddhism in South Vietnam. Government forces raided it in August 1963 during the crackdown on the monks, weeks before the coup that killed the president.

   Citadel of Saigon (1790)

   A star-shaped fortress built in 1790 to guard Saigon, and destroyed by French naval bombardment in February 1859 during the conquest of Cochinchina. Nothing of it remains above ground.

   Dam Sen Cultural Park

   An amusement park of fifty hectares in the west of the city, a fifth of it lake and much of the rest garden. It is where Saigon families spend public holidays.

   Tan Dinh church

   A parish church of 1876 painted pink inside and out, in a Romanesque manner with Gothic detail. The colour has made it one of the most photographed buildings in the city.

   Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts

   The city's art museum, in a merchant's mansion of the late 1920s that mixes French and Chinese detail and holds the first lift installed in Saigon. Vietnamese lacquer and silk painting are the strengths of the collection.

   Jade Emperor Pagoda

   A Taoist temple of 1909 built by the Cantonese community, crowded with carved wooden figures of gods and generals in rooms thick with incense. A pond of turtles sits in the courtyard.

   Ho Chi Minh City Museum of History

   A museum at 2 Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm Street in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City. The French architect Auguste Delaval designed it and it opened on 1 January 1929; it passed through the names Musée Blanchard de la Brosse and National Museum of Vietnam in Saigon before taking its present one in 1979.

   Dragon House

   The original commercial wharf of Saigon, built in the 1860s with a pair of dragons on its roof. Ho Chi Minh sailed from this quay as a kitchen hand in 1911, which is why the building is now a museum about him.

   Bình Tây Market

   The largest market in Cholon in Ho Chi Minh City. Before 1975 it was called the new great market, to distinguish it from the old one.

   Tao Dan Park

   A park of ten hectares behind the palace in District 1, planted with old tamarind and dipterocarp trees and holding a small garden of Cham-style sculpture. It fills before six in the morning with people exercising.

    Giác Lâm Pagoda

    One of the oldest temples in Ho Chi Minh City, built in 1744. The Vietnamese ministry of culture, sports and tourism designated it a national cultural and historical site on 16 November 1988.
