   San Agustin Church

   The oldest stone church in the Philippines, finished in 1607 and the only building in Intramuros to come through the destruction of 1945. Its barrel ceiling is painted in trompe-l'œil by Italian artists, and it is World Heritage.

   Malacañang Palace

   The residence and office of the president, on the Pasig, grown out of a Spanish country house of the 1750s. Visits must be applied for in advance; the museum in the grounds is easier to get into.

   Rizal Park

   A park of nearly sixty hectares on Manila Bay, laid out where José Rizal was shot in December 1896. Its lawns, gardens and the ground of the execution are the country's most important civic space.

   Manila Cathedral

   The cathedral of Manila, destroyed and rebuilt eight times since 1581 by fire, earthquake, typhoon and war. The present Romanesque-revival building dates from 1958 and keeps a rose window of Filipino design.

   Masjid Al-Dahab

   The largest mosque in Metro Manila, in the Muslim quarter of Quiapo, built in 1976 in a hurry for a state visit that never happened. Its golden dome gives it the name it is known by.

   San Sebastian Church

   A Gothic church of prefabricated steel, cast in Belgium and bolted together in Manila in 1891 — the only all-steel church in Asia, built that way after earlier stone churches kept falling down in earthquakes.

   Quiapo Church

   The church of the Black Nazarene, a dark wooden Christ brought from Mexico in 1606 and believed to work miracles. Its procession each January draws millions into the streets, barefoot and pulling the carriage by rope.

   Fort Santiago

   A citadel built from 1571 at the mouth of the Pasig, the strongpoint of Spanish Manila. Rizal was held in it before his execution and his cell is a shrine; hundreds of prisoners died in its dungeons in 1945.

   Quezon Memorial Circle

   A national park inside a large elliptical roundabout in Quezon City, built around a mausoleum of three pylons sixty-six metres high — one for each of the country's main island groups. President Quezon and his wife are buried beneath it.

   Bonifacio Global City

   A business district of two hundred and forty hectares built from the 1990s on a former army base, and now the most expensive office and residential address in the Philippines. It was laid out with wide pavements, which is rare in Manila.

   A non-denominational megachurch founded by a Filipino Chinese businessman turned pastor, with its main centre in Pasig and some eighty-five satellite congregations across the country.

   Rizal Monument

   The monument over Rizal's remains in Luneta, unveiled in 1913 to a design by a Swiss sculptor. It is guarded around the clock by sentries who change with a slow drill, and is the point from which distances in the country are measured.

   National Museum of Fine Arts

   The national art museum, in the former legislative building beside Rizal Park, and free to enter. Its centrepiece is Juan Luna's Spoliarium of 1884, four metres by seven, which won a gold medal in Madrid and stunned Rizal's generation.

   Aguinaldo Shrine

   The house at Kawit in Cavite where Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain on 12 June 1898, from a window on the upper floor. The building is preserved with the secret passages and hiding places he added.

   Manila Bay Beach

   An artificial beach laid along Manila Bay in 2020 from crushed dolomite shipped in from Cebu, as part of a bay rehabilitation programme. Its cost and its effect on the shoreline have been argued about ever since.

   Baclaran Church

   A national shrine at Baclaran to Our Mother of Perpetual Help, run by the Redemptorists and among the largest Marian churches in the country. Its Wednesday novena fills the building and the streets around it every week.

   San Andres

   A district south of Malate and Paco, bounded by the Estero Tripa de Gallina and running down to the Makati city line. It falls in Manila's 5th congressional district and holds the Sagrada Familia parish church and the Manila South Cemetery, a Makati exclave inside it.

   Binondo Church

   The church of Binondo, founded in 1596 for Chinese converts and rebuilt after the war left it a shell. It is a national shrine to Lorenzo Ruiz, a Chinese-Filipino altar boy from this parish who was martyred in Nagasaki in 1637 and became the first Filipino saint.

    Santo Domingo Church

    A Dominican church in Quezon City, rebuilt in the 1950s after the war destroyed its predecessor, and holding the ivory image of La Naval de Manila. The October procession for that image has been held since 1646.
