Calama is the working town for the Atacama, the driest desert on earth — some weather stations here have never recorded rain — and for Chuquicamata, an open copper pit visible from orbit.

San Pedro de Atacama, an hour and a half east, is where visitors actually stay. Valle de la Luna is for sunset and the El Tatio geysers for dawn, at 4,300 metres, when the steam columns are at their tallest.

    Estadio Zorros del Desierto

    A football stadium owned by the city of Calama in Chile. It is the home ground of Cobreloa and has also been used by the Chilean national team.

    St. John the Baptist Cathedral, Calama

    The main Catholic church of the diocese of Calama, on the square of a desert mining town. It is one of the few older buildings in a place that exists for the copper at Chuquicamata.

    Pucará de Lasana

    An Atacameno fortress of stone on a spur above the Loa canyon, built around the 12th century and holding more than a hundred rooms behind its walls. A national monument, it looks across the gorge towards the oasis of Chiu Chiu.

    Iglesia de San Francisco (Chiu Chiu)

    A Catholic church at Chiu Chiu in Calama in the Antofagasta region of Chile. Built around 1650, it is the oldest church in Chile and was declared a national monument in 1951.
