   Coquimbo Mosque

   A mosque and cultural centre at Coquimbo, built in 2007 as a scaled copy of the Koutoubia in Marrakesh and funded by Morocco. It is the largest mosque in South America and stands on a hill above a Chilean port with almost no Muslim population, which is the oddity of it.

   Our Lady of Mercy Cathedral, La Serena

   The cathedral of the archdiocese of La Serena, at the northeastern corner of the Plaza de Armas. It is the largest church in the city and stands on the site of the parish church founded when the city was established in 1549.

   Parque Japonés de La Serena

   A Japanese garden of some two and a half hectares laid out in 1994 for the 450th anniversary of the city, and the largest of its kind in South America. Lakes, bridges and a pagoda sit among stone lanterns sent from Japan.

   Cruz del Tercer Milenio

   A concrete cross eighty-three metres high and forty wide on the El Vigía hill at Coquimbo in Chile. Work began in 1999 and finished in 2001, and it stands at 197 metres above sea level.

   Iglesia de San Agustín

   A church begun by the Jesuits in 1755 and handed to the Augustinians after the order was expelled from Spanish America in 1767. Its neoclassical front is one of the thirty-odd churches that earned La Serena its name as the city of churches.

   Museo Arqueológico, La Serena

   The archaeological museum of La Serena, strongest in Diaguita pottery from the valleys around and in Molle petroglyphs. Its best-known piece is a moai carried from Easter Island, the only one on the Chilean mainland.
