   Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts

   The national fine arts museum of Chile, in a Beaux-Arts palace built for the 1910 independence centenary, and the oldest art museum in South America — founded in 1880. It holds about five thousand works, mostly Chilean, in Parque Forestal.

   Chilean National Museum of Natural History

   The national natural history museum, founded in 1830 by the French naturalist Claudio Gay, in Quinta Normal park. Its Chilean specimens include a mummified Atacama child and a blue whale skeleton hung in the main hall.

   Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral

   The cathedral of Santiago on the Plaza de Armas, the fifth church on the site after earthquakes destroyed the earlier ones, finished in 1800 to a design by Joaquín Toesca. Its neoclassical towers were added in the 1890s.

   Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art

   A museum of pre-Columbian art in the old customs house near the Plaza de Armas, built on the collection the architect Sergio Larraín García-Moreno spent nearly fifty years assembling. Andean textiles and Chinchorro mummies — the oldest deliberately mummified bodies known — are its strength.

   Santa Lucía Hill

   A rocky hill in the centre of Santiago, called Huelén in Mapudungun, from which Pedro de Valdivia founded the city in 1541. Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna turned the bare rock into terraced gardens in the 1870s and is buried in a chapel on it.

   Museum of Memory and Human Rights

   A museum opened on 11 January 2010 by President Bachelet, on the human rights violations of the Pinochet dictatorship from 1973 to 1990 — about 3,200 killed and 38,000 tortured. Testimonies, court files and the letters of the disappeared are its evidence.

   Santiago Museum of Contemporary Art

   A contemporary art museum founded in 1947 and run by the University of Chile's arts faculty, split since 2005 between a site in Parque Forestal and another in Quinta Normal. Its Parque Forestal building shares a wall with the fine arts museum.

   Sanhattan

   The financial district in Las Condes and Providencia, nicknamed from Santiago and Manhattan, where the city's towers are concentrated between the Mapocho and Américo Vespucio. The 300-metre Gran Torre Santiago, the tallest building in South America, is in it.

   Villa Grimaldi

   A former estate in Peñalolén used from 1974 as the main interrogation and torture centre of DINA, Pinochet's secret police, through which about 4,500 prisoners passed and at least 240 disappeared. The buildings were bulldozed in 1989 to destroy evidence; it is now a memorial park.

    Plaza Baquedano

    The oval plaza where the Alameda, Providencia Avenue and Vicuna Mackenna meet, opened in 1928 around Virginio Arias's equestrian statue of General Manuel Baquedano. Santiaguinos call it Plaza Italia, and it is where the city gathers for celebrations and for protest alike.

   Bahá'í House of Worship for the South American continent

   The Baháʼí House of Worship for South America, opened in 2016 in the Andean foothills above Santiago, of nine translucent marble and cast-glass wings that change colour with the light. It is the last of the continental Baháʼí temples to be built.

   Plaza de Armas

   The square Pedro de Valdivia laid out in 1541 as the centre of Santiago, closed by the cathedral, the central post office, the Royal Audiencia palace and the city hall. Street painters, chess players and preachers occupy it, and the metro runs beneath.

   O'Higgins Park

   A park of about 75 hectares, the second largest in Santiago after the Metropolitan Park, named for Bernardo O'Higgins. On 18 September, independence day, it fills with fondas and ramadas — temporary halls for cueca dancing, empanadas and chicha.

   Fantasilandia

   The largest and oldest amusement park in Chile, opened in 1978 in a corner of O'Higgins Park, with about forty rides. Its Raptor coaster of 2019 was the first in the country with an inversion of that height.

   Santiago Metropolitan Park

   An urban park of about 722 hectares over San Cristóbal and Chacarillas hills, the largest city park in Latin America and one of the largest in the world. A funicular and cable car climb it; a fourteen-metre Virgin stands on the summit at 880 metres.

   Torre Entel

   A 127.4-metre telecommunications tower on the Alameda, begun in 1970 and opened in 1974, and for years the tallest structure in Chile. It has a public observation deck and was a state broadcasting landmark under both governments of that decade.

   Lastarria

   A historic quarter at the foot of Santa Lucía hill, of cinemas, theatres, small museums, bars and restaurants, and the closest Santiago has to a bohemian district. Sunday closes the streets to traffic for an antiques market.

   San Francisco Church, Santiago de Chile

   A Franciscan church on the Alameda, begun in 1586 and the oldest surviving building in Santiago, which has come through at least fifteen earthquakes above magnitude seven. The Virgin del Socorro that Valdivia carried on his saddle in 1540 is on the high altar.

   Quinta Normal Park

   A 35.5-hectare park west of the centre, laid out in 1841 as an agricultural school and now holding the natural history museum, the railway museum and the science museum. The Matucana cultural centre is across the avenue.

    Votive Temple of Maipú

    A 91-metre basilica at Maipú, on the battlefield where Chilean independence was secured in April 1818, built to fulfil O'Higgins's vow to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The present church of 1974 stands beside the ruined walls of the eighteenth-century original.
