   Sacred Heart Cathedral, Punta Arenas

   The cathedral of Punta Arenas, on the main square facing the monument to Magellan. It was built in the 1890s by Salesian missionaries, whose order did much of the schooling and much of the mission work among the Selk'nam and Kawésqar.

   Regional museum of Magallanes

   The regional museum in the Braun-Menendez mansion of 1905, kept with its rooms much as the family left them: French furniture, English fittings and Belgian panelling shipped in when wool made Punta Arenas rich.

   Palacio Sara Braun

   A mansion built in the 1890s for Sara Braun, widow of one of the great sheep barons, to designs by the French architect Numa Mayer. Its marble, parquet and imported furnishings are open to visitors, and part of the house is now a hotel and club.

   Maria Behety Park

   A public park on the edge of Punta Arenas, part of it protected by the environment ministry as an urban wetland. Paths run between ponds and stands of native beech where birds shelter within the city.

   Museo Salesiano Maggiorino Borgatello

   A museum founded by the Salesian mission in 1893, holding the ethnography of the Selknam, Yamana and Kaweskar peoples alongside the natural history of Patagonia. Its rooms also carry the record of the missions themselves, gathered by priests who worked in Tierra del Fuego.
