   West Pearl Tower

   A 339-metre concrete tower in Chengdu carrying broadcasting and communications, with an observation deck and revolving restaurant. It was the tallest tower in western China when built in the 1980s.

   Jinsha site

   A sacrificial site of the Shu kingdom of about 1000 BC, found in 2001 during construction in Qingyang district and one of the major Chinese discoveries of this century. A gold foil disc of four birds circling a sun from it became the emblem of China's cultural heritage administration.

   Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

   A government breeding and research base for giant pandas on the northern edge of Chengdu, holding pandas of all ages from a nursery upward. Pandas are active early and sleep through the afternoon, so arriving before nine is the only sensible plan.

   Du Fu Thatched Cottage

   A ten-hectare park and museum on the western edge of Chengdu where Du Fu, the Tang poet, lived in a thatched hut during the An Lushan rebellion and wrote about 240 poems. Bamboo groves and a reconstructed cottage stand on the site.

   Mao Zedong Statue

   A thirty-metre marble statue of Mao Zedong with one arm outstretched on Tianfu Square, erected in the late 1960s. The whole axis of central Chengdu is set on it, and it is one of the few large Mao statues left in a Chinese city centre.

   Temple of Marquis Wu, Chengdu

   A shrine to Zhuge Liang, chancellor of Shu, standing beside the tomb of his lord Liu Bei — the only place in China where ruler and minister are honoured together. Rebuilt in 1672, its red walls and bamboo alleys draw crowds who know the Three Kingdoms by heart.

   Zhaojue Temple

   A Buddhist temple in Chenghua district founded in the Tang period, and a major Chan monastery of Sichuan — its abbots were influential in the Linji line. The city zoo adjoins it.

   Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque

   The largest mosque in Sichuan, in Qingyang district, serving a Hui community established here since the Ming and Qing. Its prayer hall sits under Chinese timber roofs rather than a dome.

   Tomb of Wang Jian

   The tomb of Wang Jian, who founded the Former Shu kingdom in 907 and died in 918, excavated in the 1940s. Reliefs around the coffin platform show twenty-four musicians with their instruments, the best surviving record of a Tang court orchestra.

    Jinli

    A restored old street beside the Wuhou Shrine, themed on the Three Kingdoms period whose Shu capital was here. Lantern-lit at night, it runs to skewers, Sichuan snacks and silk shops.

   Wenshu Monastery

   A busy Chan monastery in Qingyang district, founded in the Tang and rebuilt in 1697, whose vegetarian restaurant and open-air teahouse are as much a draw as the halls. It holds a relic said to be a fragment of Xuanzang's skull.

   People's Park

   The first public park in Chengdu, laid out in 1911 as Shaocheng Park, and the emblem of the city's slow pace. The Heming teahouse in it serves tea for hours at a time with ear-cleaners working the tables, and a corner is used as a marriage noticeboard.

   Daci Temple

   A Buddhist temple in the middle of Chengdu whose name means Temple of Great Compassion. Founded in the Wei-Jin period and much enlarged under the Tang, it is remembered as the place where the pilgrim Xuanzang was ordained; the Taikoo Li shopping streets now wrap around its walls.

   Chengdu Tianfu Art Museum

   A contemporary art museum in the Tianfu Art Park, opened in 2021 under a roof of overlapping shells shaped after the hibiscus, the city's emblem. It faces a lake across from the museum of modern art in the same complex.

   Chengdu Museum

   The municipal museum on the west side of Tianfu Square, opened in 2016 behind a facade of bronze lattice. Its floors carry the city's history from the bronzes of the Shu kingdom through Han tomb figures to a gallery given over to Sichuan shadow puppetry.

   Immaculate Conception Cathedral

   The Catholic cathedral of Chengdu on Xihuamen Street in Qingyang district, built by French missionaries in the late nineteenth century and known as the Ping'anqiao church. Its Western body carries Chinese roof forms and ornament.

   A theme park in Jinniu district, part of the Happy Valley chain, with roller coasters and themed zones. It works as a supplementary day for families rather than a destination in itself.

   A zoo in northern Chengdu holding about three thousand animals of three hundred species, the fourth largest in China. It adjoins Zhaojue Temple and keeps giant pandas along with Sichuan species.

    Joint tombs of boat-shaped coffins

    A group of Shu-kingdom tombs found in Chengdu, dating from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, in which whole tree trunks were hollowed into boat-shaped coffins. The practice is distinctive to this region.
