   Shun Hing Square

   A 384-metre tower of 1996, briefly the tallest in China. It was built at a rate of about four days per floor, which became the standard boast of Shenzhen speed; the observation deck near the top looks across the bay to Hong Kong.

   Minsk

   A Soviet Kiev-class carrier that served from 1978 to 1994, sold for scrap and instead turned into a museum ship at Shenzhen. Visitors walk the flight deck and the hangar; the Yak-38 jets and the missile launchers are still aboard.

   Window of the World

   A park of scale models of world landmarks — the Eiffel Tower at a third size, the pyramids, Manhattan — laid out over forty-eight hectares. It opened in 1994, when few Chinese citizens could travel abroad, and its purpose has quietly changed since.

   Hong Kong Wetland Park

   A conservation, education and tourism site north of Tin Shui Wai in Yuen Long. It was created as an ecological buffer to make up for the wetland lost to the Tin Shui Wai new town, and consists of a visitor centre of ten thousand square metres and sixty hectares of wetland reserve.

   Hong Kong Railway Museum

   A railway museum opened on 20 December 1985 on the site of the old Tai Po Market station, built in 1913. It is a branch of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

   Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden

   A farm and botanic garden on the flank of Kwun Yam Shan near Pak Ngau Shek in the New Territories of Hong Kong. It was set up in 1956 to help poor farmers, on the streams, woods and terraces of a valley, and later turned to biodiversity conservation and environmental education for Hong Kong and southern China.

   Shenzhen Mosque

   A mosque in the Futian district of Shenzhen in Guangdong. It was built as Muslim workers and traders gathered in the city from across the country after the reform and opening, and serves as the centre of Muslim worship there.

   Huaqiangbei

   A subdistrict of Futian holding the largest electronics market on earth: several city blocks of malls subdivided into thousands of stalls selling components, tools and finished goods. Anything electronic can be sourced here in an afternoon, which is why engineers come from everywhere.

   Shekou

   The southern tip of Nanshan, where the special economic zone actually began — the first factories opened here in 1979, two years before the rest. It has since turned into a harbour front of bars and restaurants, and the ferry to Hong Kong airport leaves from it.

    Tai Po Waterfront Park

    A park of twenty-two hectares beside Tolo Harbour at Tai Po in the New Territories of Hong Kong. Its western end reaches the mouth of the Lam Tsuen river, and it is the largest park managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

   Minsk World

   A military theme park that stood at Shatoujiao on Dapeng Bay in Shenzhen, Guangdong. The former Soviet aircraft carrier Minsk was converted into the attraction, which opened on 10 May 2000.

   Tsz Shan Monastery

   A large Buddhist monastery at Tung Tsz in Tai Po in Hong Kong. A white bronze Guanyin seventy-six metres high stands there, with the Pat Sin Leng ridge behind and Plover Cove reservoir in front.

   Lianhuashan Park

   A hill park of 150 hectares north of the Futian central business district in Shenzhen, opened in 1997. From its summit the whole line of towers on Shennan Boulevard opens out.

   A district in Nanshan developed from 1985 by a state company for returned overseas Chinese, and now the city's cultural quarter — the theme parks, the OCT-LOFT arts district in converted factories, and a good deal of expensive housing.

   Happy Valley Shenzhen

   A theme park in the Nanshan district of Shenzhen in Guangdong. It opened in 1998 as the first of the Happy Valley chain, and covers 350,000 square metres in nine zones including a Spanish square and a cartoon city.

    Fairylake Botanical Garden

    A botanical garden of 546 hectares in the Luohu district of Shenzhen in Guangdong, beside the Shenzhen reservoir at the foot of Wutong Mountain. It was rated a national 4A tourist site in 2007 and a national key park in 2008.
