   Mukden Palace

   The Mukden Palace was the imperial residence of Nurhaci and Hong Taiji, keeping a Manchu palace form that predates the Forbidden City. It is a World Heritage Site and compact enough to see properly in two hours.

   Fuling Tomb

   The Fuling tomb, also called the eastern tomb, holds Nurhachi, and its spirit way through the pine forest is imposing. With the Zhaoling it conveys the weight of Shenyang as the birthplace of the Qing.

   Zhao Mausoleum

   The tomb of Hong Taiji, who declared the Qing dynasty, and his empress, set in what is now Shenyang's largest park. Stone animals line the spirit way, and the complex was added to the World Heritage list in 2004.

   Fushun War Criminals Management Centre

   The prison where Japanese war criminals and Manchukuo and Nationalist officials were held from 1950; the last emperor Puyi spent ten years in it. The cells, workshops and study rooms are kept as they were, and the site is presented as an argument about re-education rather than punishment.

   Liaoning Broadcast and TV Tower

   A telecommunications tower 305.5 metres high in Shenyang, Liaoning, completed in 1989. The disc near the top holds an enclosed observation deck, a revolving restaurant and a small bar.

    Shenyang Railway Museum

    A railway museum in the Sujiatun district of Shenyang in Liaoning. It stands north of the Sujiatun locomotive depot of the Shenyang railway bureau, on eighty thousand square metres of ground with nineteen thousand square metres of buildings.

   Shenyang Botanical Garden

   A botanical garden on Qipan Mountain in the eastern suburbs of Shenyang in Liaoning. It was established in February 1959 and hosted the Shenyang World Horticultural Exposition in 2006, from which it is also called the Expo Garden.

   A Protestant church in Shenyang in Liaoning. It is among the largest and oldest churches in the northeast and is called the cradle of Christianity among the Koreans of China and on the Korean peninsula.

   Banruo Temple

   A Buddhist nunnery in the Shenhe district, its halls covering about 1,000 square metres inside grounds of more than 3,600. Founded under the Qing and rebuilt several times since, it is one of the few temples in Shenyang served entirely by bhikkhuni.
