   Mogao Caves

   Four hundred and ninety-two painted caves cut into a cliff between the fourth and fourteenth centuries, holding some forty-five thousand square metres of wall painting. The Library Cave was sealed about the year 1000 and opened in 1900; its fifty thousand manuscripts are now largely in London, Paris and St Petersburg.

   Dunhuang Mosque

   A mosque built in 1917 for the Hui community of Dunhuang, laid out around a courtyard in the Chinese manner rather than under domes. It serves the town's Muslim residents and the traders working the old Silk Road route.

   Singing Sand Dunes

   A dune at Dunhuang in Gansu that sings or drums when the wind blows, from which it takes its name. It forms part of the Kumtag desert and was formerly called Shenshashan, the mountain of divine sand.

   A museum at Dunhuang in Gansu. It holds Chinese and Tibetan manuscripts and everyday objects from Cave 17 at Mogao, and divides its display into the Mogao caves, the old tombs and silk textiles.

   Stele of Sulaiman

   A Yuan-dynasty stele of 1348 raised in honour of the donors to a temple at the Mogao caves southeast of Dunhuang. The principal donor was Sulaiman, prince of Xining, who died in 1351; it is known for carrying the mantra Om mani padme hum in six scripts and is now held by the Dunhuang Academy.
