   Longmen Grottoes

   Some two thousand three hundred caves and niches cut into the cliffs above the Yi river between 493 and the Tang, holding around a hundred thousand Buddhist figures. The Vairocana of 675, seventeen metres high, is said to carry the face of the empress Wu Zetian, who paid for it.

   White Horse Temple

   Founded in AD 68 and by tradition the first Buddhist temple in China, named for the white horses that carried the sutras from India. Two Indian monks translated the first Chinese scriptures here and are buried in the courtyard; Thai, Burmese and Indian halls have been added in recent decades.

   Luoyang Museum

   The city museum of Luoyang, which was the capital of one dynasty after another for the better part of a thousand years. Its Tang three-colour pottery and Eastern Zhou bronzes are the strengths of the collection.

   Tomb of An Bei

   A Sui-dynasty tomb of 589 belonging to a Sogdian whose epitaph gives his name as An Bei. It was robbed in 2006 and 2007 and its contents sold on the art market; part of the tomb platform and the epitaph are now in the Great Tang West Market Museum in Xi'an.

   Tomb of Bai Juyi

   The tomb of the poet Bai Juyi, who lived from 772 to 846, on Pipa Peak on the eastern hill of Longmen south of Luoyang. It is known as the Bai Garden and covers some 180,000 square metres.
