Zhongdian renamed itself Shangri-La in 2001 after Hilton's novel and does not entirely have to apologise: it stands at 3,300 metres in ethnically Tibetan Yunnan, with yaks on the Napahai grassland.

Ganden Sumtseling, founded in 1679, is the largest Tibetan monastery in the province and looks like a smaller Potala. The old town of Dukezong burned in 2014 and has been rebuilt. Take the altitude slowly.

    Pudacuo National Park

    A protected area of 1,300 square kilometres at Shangri-La in Diqing, Yunnan. Despite the name it is not part of any Chinese national park system but a pilot site, and its lakes, meadows and spruce forest sit above 3,500 metres.

    Ganden Sumtseling Monastery

    A Tibetan Buddhist monastery at 3,380 metres, five kilometres from Shangri-La in Diqing in Yunnan. Built in 1679, it is the largest monastery in Diqing, which is why it is sometimes called the little Potala.
