   Zhongshan Square is a radial plaza ringed by more than ten bank buildings of the Russian and Japanese periods. The architecture alone reads out the modern history of Dalian.

   A Protestant church in Dalian, Liaoning. It occupies the former Dalian Lutheran church building, is listed as a municipal heritage structure, and has been renamed Cheng'en Hall, though locals still use the old name.

   People's Square

   A square laid out by the Japanese administration in 1914 and renamed with each change of power: Government Square in 1945, Stalin Square under the Soviets in 1949, and People's Square since 1999. It was the city's largest until Xinghai Square opened in 1997.

   Zhongshan Park (Dalian, China)

   A park of 102,000 square metres in the Shahekou district of Dalian in Liaoning. It was laid out in 1911 under the Japanese lease and took its present name in 1946, after the style name of Sun Yat-sen.

   Dalian Laodong Park

   The largest park in central Dalian, 1.02 million square metres at the foot of Green Mountain and only 500 metres from the railway station. Some three million people pass through each year; at weekends matchmakers hang paper slips on the trees in the eastern corner.

   Xinghai Park

   A beach park on Dalian's south coast, laid out in the colonial period and among the oldest public gardens in the city. Its sand curves round to Xinghai Square, made in 1997 and one of the largest city squares in Asia.

    Tiger Beach Ocean Park

    A marine park along the cliffs east of Dalian, with a polar aquarium, a coral hall and a whale pool built into the coast. A group of stone tigers stands above the shore, from the rock that gives the bay its name.
