   Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

   A massif of thirteen peaks north of Lijiang rising to 5,596 metres, sacred to the Naxi and never climbed to the summit. A cable car reaches 4,500 metres, where the thin air is sold in bottles at the top station and the glacier is measurably retreating.

   Old Town of Lijiang

   The old town of Lijiang, laid out by the Naxi with no city wall and with channels of meltwater running down every lane — the town was planned around the water rather than around defence. World Heritage since 1997, rebuilt after the 1996 earthquake, and crowded.

   Black Dragon Pool

   A pool in Yuquan Park at the foot of Xiangshan north of the old town of Lijiang. It was made in 1737, the second year of the Qianlong reign, and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the highest peak in the region, appears beyond its white marble bridge.

   A highland lake in Yunnan covering about 77.22 square kilometres, with a mean depth of 25.7 metres, at an altitude of 1,503 metres.

   Haba Snow Mountain

   A mountain of nearly five and a half thousand metres above the northwest side of Tiger Leaping Gorge, facing Jade Dragon across it. Between the two, the Yangtze runs some three and a half thousand metres below the summits.

   A mountain in northwestern Yunnan. It falls within the 1,085-square-kilometre Laojunshan area spanning the counties of Yulong, Jianchuan, Lanping and Weixi, and runs from 2,100 to 4,513 metres.

   Haimenkou Site

   A Bronze Age lakeside settlement near Jianchuan where thousands of wooden piles from stilt houses survive in the waterlogged ground. Digs since 1957 have traced three phases from about 1500 BC and turned up some of the earliest bronze and iron working in the region.
