   St. Joseph's Church

   Auguste Perret's concrete church of 1951-58, built as part of the rebuilding of Le Havre after the bombardment of 1944 and dedicated to the five thousand civilians killed. Its lantern tower rises 107 metres over the city and glows at night through coloured glass.

   Le Havre Cathedral

   A parish church of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that became Le Havre's cathedral in 1974. It is the oldest building left standing in a centre otherwise flattened in 1944; the bell tower dates from about 1520 and the front is baroque.

   A church at Honfleur in Normandy in France. After the stone church was destroyed in the Hundred Years' War it was rebuilt in the late fifteenth century in timber, with a double nave and a bell tower standing apart from it; shipwrights built it, and the roofs read as upturned hulls.
