Zhangjiajie stands below Wulingyuan, where several thousand quartzite pillars rise out of the forest; the film Avatar borrowed their look, and one of them has been officially renamed after the film.

The Bailong lift climbs 326 metres up a cliff face in glass. Tianmen Mountain adds a cable car, a glass walkway pinned to the rock and a stair of 999 steps. Book the popular sections before arriving.

    Tianmenshan Temple

    A Tang foundation on Tianmen mountain at about fifteen hundred metres, rebuilt in recent decades. Getting there is the experience: the world's longest passenger cable car from the city, then the road of ninety-nine bends, then the nine hundred and ninety-nine steps to Heaven's Gate.

    Huanglong Cave

    A karst cave in Wulingyuan opened to visitors in 1984, with rivers, halls and forests of stalagmites on several levels, one of them crossed by boat. Over a million people a year pass through, and a grass-roofed concert hall was built at the entrance in 2010.
