   Our Lady of Exile and St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, Florianópolis

   The cathedral of Florianopolis, grown from the small limestone church Francisco Dias Velho began in 1679 and in which the founder of the settlement was later murdered. It became a cathedral when the diocese was created in 1908 and is protected as national heritage.

   Ribeirão da Ilha

   A village of Azorean colonists on the southwest shore of the island, its painted houses and church of 1806 facing a sheltered channel. That calm water made it the centre of Brazilian oyster farming, and the restaurants along the road serve little else.

   Fortaleza de São José da Ponta Grossa

   A fortress completed on the northern coast of Florianópolis in 1740. It is one of three forts that guarded the entrance to Santa Catarina island and has been restored.

   Santa Catarina Art Museum

   The Santa Catarina art museum, opened at Florianópolis in 1949. It occupies the former governor's residence and holds the modern and contemporary art of the state.
