Fortaleza has city beaches and a good deal of noise, but people come for what is west of it — the wind coast, where the trade winds blow hard enough to make this one of the world's kitesurfing centres.

Jericoacoara, three hundred kilometres away and reached only by buggy over sand, is a former fishing village where everyone climbs the dune for sunset. Cumbuco is the nearer version, an hour out.

Praia de Iracema

St. Joseph's Cathedral, Fortaleza
The Catholic cathedral of Fortaleza, built between 1938 and 1978 in neo-Gothic to a French design, and the third largest church in Brazil. It seats about five thousand and stands beside the central market.

Parangaba
A district in southern Fortaleza, an independent town before the city grew around it, set on a large lake. It is the interchange point between the city's commuter railway and metro lines.

A neighbourhood of Fortaleza named after Rodolfo Teófilo, the pharmacist and writer who documented the Ceará droughts and vaccinated against smallpox in the 1900s. The federal university's main campus is in it.

The main city beach of Fortaleza, its long promenade lined with hotels and coconut palms. A craft market sets up along it every evening, and the jangada rafts of the old fishermen still put out from the sand at dawn.

Fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption
A fort on the hill above the Pajeu creek, begun by the Dutch in 1649 as Schoonenborch and rebuilt in its present form in 1812 under Portuguese rule. The city of Fortaleza takes its name from it, and the army holds the walls still.

A marine state park about forty kilometres off Fortaleza, on a reef at eighteen to twenty-six metres depth, and the first marine state park declared in Brazil. It is a diving site with manta rays and whale sharks passing seasonally.
