   Amazon Theatre

   An opera house of 1896 in the middle of the rainforest, built with rubber money: Italian marble, French glass, an Alsatian iron frame, and a dome of thirty-six thousand tiles in the national colours. The road outside was paved in rubber so that carriages would not disturb performances.

   A Latter-day Saints temple opened at Manaus in 2012. It is the only temple of that church in the Amazon region, with white walls and a single spire.

   Mercado Adolpho Lisboa

   A market hall built at the port of Manaus in 1883. It was made of iron on the model of Les Halles in Paris and trades in Amazon fish and medicinal plants.

   Igreja de São Sebastião

   A church built in 1888 beside the opera house in Manaus. It went up during the rubber boom with materials shipped from Europe, and stands over the wave-patterned paving of the square, which was laid in the same campaign.

   Mocó Reservoir

   A reservoir in Manaus. It was built for the city water supply during the rubber boom in the early twentieth century and still serves that purpose.

   Compensa

   A residential district west of Manaus. It grew as population poured into the city in the later twentieth century, and lies low beside a tributary of the Rio Negro, so it floods often.

   A monument raised in Manaus in 1900 commemorating the opening of Brazil's ports in 1808. A white marble figure of a goddess stands at the top of the column.

   Rio Negro Palace

   The former governor's residence in Manaus, built in 1903 as the house of a German rubber merchant and later bought by the state. It now works as a cultural centre.

   Ponta Negra

   An affluent district on the Rio Negro in the west of Manaus, its waterfront promenade lined with restaurants and an open-air amphitheatre. The beach widens as the river falls late in the year, and the road along it closes to traffic for festivals and New Year.

   Adrianópolis

   An affluent quarter in the south-centre of Manaus, once called Vila Municipal, grown from the villages that workers built in the early 20th century within walking distance of the centre. The old tram terminus is now the square of Nossa Senhora de Nazare.

   Benjamin Constant suspended bridge

   An iron bridge built in Manaus in 1895. Its components were shipped from Europe during the rubber boom and assembled here to carry a street across a ravine in the middle of the city.

   A synagogue in Manaus, founded by Jewish merchants who came from Morocco in the late nineteenth century, and one of the surviving synagogues of the Amazon.
