   Castillo de Fuste

   A round defence tower of 1740 above the beach at Caleta de Fuste, built against Barbary raiders who had taken islanders as slaves for two centuries. It is small, restored, and the resort has grown up around it.

   Malpaís de la Arena

   A field of black lava and cinder around the Calderon Hondo volcano near Lajares, protected as a natural monument. A path climbs to the crater rim in half an hour, with the dunes of Corralejo and the island of Lobos beyond.

   Morro Velosa

   A lookout that Cesar Manrique built on the Tegu ridge at about 645 metres, with a bar, gardens and a relief model of the island. The view runs north over Betancuria to the dunes of Corralejo; a kilometre away stand the statues of the old kings Guise and Ayose.
