   Girona Cathedral

   A cathedral with the widest Gothic nave in the world at 22.98 metres, built without aisles between 1417 and 1604 after the master mason persuaded a sceptical panel of experts it would stand. Ninety steps climb from the square to the door; the Tapestry of Creation of about 1100 is in its museum.

   A medieval castle at Púbol that Salvador Dalí bought and restored for Gala in 1969, on the condition that he could only visit by written invitation. She is buried in the crypt and the rooms are kept as she used them.

   Basilica of St. Felix (Girona)

   A collegiate church in Girona begun in the twelfth century and finished in Gothic, its truncated octagonal spire one of the marks of the skyline. Early Christian sarcophagi are set into the walls of the chancel.

   A museum in the former Jewish quarter of Girona on the site of the medieval synagogue, covering Catalan Jewish life up to the expulsion of 1492. Girona's community was one of the most important in Catalonia and produced the kabbalist Nachmanides.

   Sant Pere de Galligants

   A Benedictine abbey in Girona whose Romanesque church and cloister of about 1130 have capitals carved with beasts and biblical scenes, among the finest in Catalonia. It has housed the city's archaeology museum since 1857.

   Monastery of Sant Daniel

   A Benedictine convent in a valley east of Girona, founded in 1018 and still occupied by nuns. Its cloister was built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries and the tomb of Saint Daniel is carved in alabaster.

   One of the five sites of the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia, in the Benedictine abbey of Sant Pere de Galligants in Girona. Its collection runs from the Palaeolithic through the Greek and Roman settlements of the coast to the Visigoths.

   A museum of pottery and industrial ceramics at La Bisbal d'Empordà, opened in 1991 in a former ceramics factory with its kilns intact. The town has made earthenware since the medieval period and still does.
