   Great Mosque of Hohhot

   The oldest and largest mosque in Inner Mongolia, in the Muslim quarter, founded in the Qing period. Its minaret is built as a Chinese pavilion tower rather than in any Middle Eastern form — the clearest single example of how Islamic building was absorbed here.

   Five Pagoda Temple of Hohhot

   A Buddhist temple in the old town of Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, near Qingcheng Park. Also called the Diamond Throne Pagoda, it was begun by the Mongol monk Yangcharji in 1727 and finished in 1732.

   Dazhao Temple

   A Gelug Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Yuquan district of Hohhot in Inner Mongolia. Altan Khan of the Tümed Mongols began it in 1557 as the first building of the city, which grew up around it, and it remains the oldest and largest temple there.

   Zhaojun Tomb

   A tomb on the Dahei river nine kilometres south of Hohhot in Inner Mongolia. It is said to hold Wang Zhaojun, the Han woman married to a Xiongnu chanyu, and is called the green mound because the grass on it is said to stay green into autumn.

   The regional museum of Inner Mongolia at Hohhot. It deals with the history of the steppe and with Mongol nomadic culture, and holds a substantial collection of dinosaur fossils from the Gobi.

   Wanbu Huayanjing Pagoda

   A large pagoda in the Saihan district of Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, commonly called the White Pagoda. It is an octagonal seven-storey tower of the Liao dynasty and was the emblem of the old city of Fengzhou; it was badly damaged when that city fell at the end of the Yuan and has been restored to its original form.

   Shiretu Juu

   A Gelug Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Yuquan district of Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, across the street from the Dazhao. It was first built in 1585, burned, and was rebuilt in the nineteenth century; its formal Chinese name is Yanshou Temple.

   Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Hohhot

   The Catholic cathedral of Hohhot in Inner Mongolia. Work began in 1922 and it became the seat of the Suiyuan archdiocese in 1924.
