Hefei is the capital of Anhui and the home town of Bao Zheng, the eleventh-century judge whose incorruptibility made him a folk hero; his shrine and tomb stand in a lake park in the centre.

For most travellers it is the doorway to Huangshan, ninety minutes away by fast train — the granite peaks and pines that Chinese painting has been copying for a thousand years, and the villages of Hongcun and Xidi below them.

    A state-owned car and commercial vehicle maker based in Hefei, and one of the larger employers in Anhui. It builds trucks, buses and, increasingly, electric cars for export.

    Hefei Olympic Sports Center Stadium

    A football stadium at Hefei in Anhui in China. It holds sixty thousand and was the home ground of Anhui Litian.

    Mingjiao Temple

    A Buddhist temple in Luyang district, once called the Iron Buddha temple. It stands on a raised platform that tradition holds was Cao Cao's parade ground for training crossbowmen, which is the reason most visitors from elsewhere in China stop.

    Dongpu Shuiku

    A reservoir begun in April 1958 west of Hefei, holding back the Dongpu river across a catchment of some 200 square kilometres. It supplies much of the city's drinking water and is closed to swimming and fishing.

    Zhongxing Shuiku

    A reservoir completed in 1972 in the hills near Hefei, built for irrigation and flood control on a tributary of the Chao lake system. Its wooded shore is used now for walking and angling.
