   International Commerce Centre

   At 484 metres and 108 storeys, the tallest building in Hong Kong, finished in 2011 above Kowloon station. Sky100 on the hundredth floor looks straight across Victoria Harbour at the Hong Kong Island skyline, and the two floors above hold the world's highest hotel.

   Bank of China Tower

   I. M. Pei's tower of 1990 at 1 Garden Road, its triangular frames rising like segments of bamboo and carrying the loads on four corner columns. It was the tallest building outside the United States when built; the 43rd-floor lobby is open to the public free of charge.

   Hong Kong Disneyland

   A Disney park on reclaimed land at Penny's Bay, opened in 2005 and the most compact of the resorts, which makes it a full day rather than three. Mystic Manor, built only here, uses a trackless ride system, and its castle was rebuilt and reopened in 2020.

   Central

   The financial district of Hong Kong on the north shore of the island, where the British landed in 1841. The world's longest covered escalator system, 800 metres, climbs from here to the Mid-Levels.

   Tsim Sha Tsui

   The southern tip of Kowloon, and the tourist gateway to it, with the Avenue of Stars along the water and the Peninsula Hotel a block inland. The Symphony of Lights plays across the harbour at eight every evening, best watched from the promenade rather than a boat.

   Hong Kong Museum of Art

   Hong Kong's first public art museum, on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, reopened in 2019 after four years with a facade of glass facing the harbour. Chinese painting and calligraphy, historical pictures of the China trade and Hong Kong contemporary art are its four collections.

   Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre

   The largest mosque in Hong Kong, at Nathan and Haiphong Road beside Kowloon Park, rebuilt in white marble in 1984 on a site used since 1896 by Muslim soldiers of the British Indian Army. It holds about 3,500 worshippers across five daily prayers.

   Aberdeen

   A harbour town on the southwest of Hong Kong Island whose Chinese name means Little Hong Kong, and where a fishing fleet still shelters in the typhoon breakwater. Sampan operators run twenty-minute tours past the remaining boat-dwellers; the Jumbo floating restaurant was towed away in 2022 and sank.

   Clock Tower in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

   A 44-metre red brick and granite tower of 1915, all that remains of the terminus of the Kowloon-Canton Railway, from which trains once ran to Europe via Siberia. It stands beside the Star Ferry pier and is a declared monument.

    Hong Kong Park

    Park in Hong Kong opened in 1991 on the site of the Victoria Barracks. Its walk-in aviary holds six hundred birds under a mesh spanning a wooded ravine.

   Ocean Park Hong Kong

   An animal and amusement park of 1977 spread over a headland, joined by cable car and a funicular through the hill. Giant pandas, a 5,000-cubic-metre aquarium and a wooden coaster along the cliff are its draws; it survived a near-bankruptcy in 2020 with a government bailout.

   Sham Shui Po

   A working-class district of northwest Kowloon, with a street of electronics stalls on Apliu, fabric and bead markets on Ki Lung, and more cheap Michelin-listed food than anywhere else in the city. The Mei Ho House, a 1954 resettlement block, is now a hostel and museum.

   Causeway Bay

   The main shopping district of Hong Kong Island, built around Sogo and Times Square, on land reclaimed from the bay it is named after. The Noon Day Gun, fired at noon by Jardine Matheson under an old penance, still sounds beside the typhoon shelter.

   Wong Tai Sin Temple

   A Taoist temple of 1921 in Wong Tai Sin, dedicated to a healer-immortal said to grant whatever is asked, and the busiest temple in Hong Kong. Rows of fortune tellers work the arcade beside it, and worshippers shake bamboo sticks from a cup to draw a reading.

   Sha Tin

   A new town of some 700,000 people along the Shing Mun River in the New Territories, built from the 1970s on reclaimed land in a former valley. The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, the Heritage Museum and Sha Tin racecourse are all within a few stops.

   Quarry Bay

   A district below Mount Parker on the east of Hong Kong Island, once the site of the Taikoo sugar refinery and dockyard. The Monster Building — five interlocking 1960s blocks with about 2,200 flats around one courtyard — draws photographers to Yick Cheong Building.

   Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

   A temple complex at Pai Tau, Sha Tin, founded in 1951 by a former businessman turned monk, reached up 431 steps lined with life-size gilded arhats. Nearly 13,000 Buddha figures fill the main hall, and monkeys work the path.

   Chi Lin Nunnery

   A nunnery at Diamond Hill rebuilt in 1998 in Tang-dynasty style, its halls joined with interlocking cypress timbers and not a single nail. Nan Lian Garden across the road, laid out on Tang principles, completes the set against a wall of apartment towers.

   Stanley

   A coastal town on the south of Hong Kong Island, where Stanley Market's lanes of cheap clothing sit beside a seafront row of pubs and restaurants. The relocated Murray House of 1846 stands on the waterfront, and the bus over the hill is worth the front upstairs seat.

    St John's Cathedral

    The Anglican cathedral of Hong Kong, consecrated in 1849 and the oldest surviving Western church building in the territory. Japanese forces used it as a club during the occupation; its land is held on the only freehold title in Hong Kong, and colonial Gothic among the Central towers is the point.
