   Ruins of St. Paul's

   The stone facade of the church of St Paul's College, built between 1602 and 1640 by Jesuits with Japanese Christian refugees among the craftsmen, and left standing alone after a typhoon-driven fire in 1835. Carvings on it mix a Chinese dragon, a Japanese chrysanthemum and a Portuguese caravel.

   Macau Tower

   A 338-metre observation tower of 2001, from which the highest commercial bungee jump in the world drops 233 metres. The Skywalk, a handrail-free circuit of the outer rim at 233 metres, is the other reason people come.

   A-Ma Temple

   A temple to the sea goddess Mazu built in 1488 at the foot of Barra hill, the oldest in Macau, and the source of the territory's name — Portuguese sailors asked where they were and were told A-Ma-Gau, the bay of A-Ma. A relief of a junk is carved into the rock behind it.

   St. Dominic's Church

   A baroque church of the late sixteenth century beside Senado Square, founded by Dominicans from Acapulco, with a cream and green facade and a teak altar. Its bell tower holds a museum of about three hundred pieces of sacred art.

   Fortaleza do Monte

   A hilltop fort where the Portuguese-era gun platforms survive, sharing the site with the Museum of Macau. The view over the cannons to the casino skyline is Macau in a single frame.

   Igreja da Sé

   The cathedral of the Macau diocese, dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady, rebuilt in concrete in 1937 on a site used since 1622. Portuguese governors were formally installed here and it stands on a small square above Senado.

   Senado Square

   The paved square at the centre of the historic district, laid with black and white Portuguese calçada in a wave pattern by masons brought from Lisbon. Pastel neoclassical buildings surround it and the lanes off it smell of egg tarts and grilled pork jerky.

   A church in the Iao Hon district of Macau, in the parish of Our Lady of Fatima, built between 1998 and 1999 to serve the northern residential area.

   Guia Fortress

   A seventeenth-century fort at the highest point of the Macau peninsula, with a chapel of 1622 and a lighthouse of 1865 — the oldest on the China coast. Frescoes in the chapel mix Christian imagery with Chinese motifs; a cable car climbs to it.

    Museum of Macau

    A city museum inside the Fortaleza do Monte, opened in 1998 on three floors cut into the fort, covering the four and a half centuries in which Macau was where China and Europe actually met. It is the right first stop before walking the historic centre.

   Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom

   A theme park at Hengqin in Zhuhai, across the water from Macau, designed by PGAV Destinations and opened in 2014. It holds one of the largest aquarium tanks in the world at 48.75 million litres and keeps whale sharks and beluga whales.

   Portas do Cerco

   The Barrier Gate at the northern tip of the Macau peninsula, the land crossing to Zhuhai, built by Portugal in 1849 to replace a Ming wall of 1573. Its inscription quotes Camões; tens of thousands of people cross here daily.

   Macau Fisherman's Wharf

   A themed retail, hotel and entertainment complex on the outer harbour with reproductions of a Roman amphitheatre and various European streetscapes. It began as an amusement park and now works as a waterfront walk beside the casinos.

   Templo de Kun Iam Tong

   Buddhist temple in Macau founded in the thirteenth century and rebuilt in 1627. The first treaty between China and the United States was signed at a stone table in its garden in 1844.

   Hac Sa Beach

   The largest natural beach in Macau, on Coloane, whose sand is grey-black from the mineral content of the water. Fernando's, a Portuguese restaurant behind it, is as much a reason to come as the swimming.

   Mandarin's House

   The family compound of Zheng Guanying, the late Qing reformist whose writings influenced both Sun Yat-sen and Mao, built from 1869 in about sixty rooms mixing Cantonese courtyard planning with Western detail. It was restored in 2010 and is free to enter.

   St. Joseph's Seminary and Church

   A Jesuit seminary and church in São Lourenço, whose church of 1758 has the only baroque dome in Macau and a spiral-columned altar. A relic of St Francis Xavier's arm bone is kept in it; the seminary trained missionaries for the whole of East Asia.

   St Lawrence's Church

   Church in Macau first built of wood by the Jesuits in the 1560s. Families of sailors watched from its steps for ships returning from Malacca, giving it the name Church of the Winds.

   Na Tcha Temple

   A small folk temple of 1888 built against the old city wall beside the Ruins of St Paul's, dedicated to Na Tcha, the child deity, after a plague. Its position — a Chinese temple pressed against a Catholic ruin — is why it is on the World Heritage list.

    St. Lazarus' Church

    Church in Macau of the 1560s, once serving a leper hospital nearby. The quarter around it was restored in 2008 and now holds galleries and design studios.
