Xishuangbanna holds China's largest surviving tract of tropical rainforest, and wild elephants still move through the valleys south of Jinghong. The Dai are close kin to the Thai, the temples have the same gilded roofs, and the market sells mango and coconut rather than dumplings.

The tropical botanical garden at Menglun holds thousands of species on a river peninsula. Wild elephants live in the reserve north of town. The water-splashing new year in mid-April is the year's loudest week.

    Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden

    A botanical garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences founded in 1959, covering 1,125 hectares at Mengla in Xishuangbanna in Yunnan. It grows more than thirteen thousand tropical plants of 2,110 genera in 301 families across thirty-five sections.

    Manfeilong Pagoda

    A white Theravada pagoda at Damenglong, built in 1204 and shaped like a cluster of nine bamboo shoots around a central spire. A hollow in the rock at its base is honoured as a footprint of the Buddha, and Dai pilgrims gather here in spring.

    Zongfo Temple

    The chief Theravada temple of Jinghong, rebuilt in 2007 on the ground of the old royal monastery of the Sipsongpanna kings. Gilded roofs step down the hillside, and monks of the Dai order study within.
