   Kaiyuan Temple (Quanzhou)

   A temple founded in 686 whose twin stone pagodas, built in the thirteenth century, are the tallest pair in China at around forty-eight metres. A Song-dynasty seagoing junk excavated from the bay is displayed in the grounds, and Hindu carvings reused in the hall show what a port this was.

   Qingjing Mosque

   A mosque on Tumen Street in Quanzhou and part of the World Heritage site. Its Arabic name, the mosque of the Companions, and its Chinese name both come from the Companions of Muhammad said to have come to the city and been buried at nearby Qingyuan.

   Mount Qingyuan

   A mountain in Fujian in China and the national park that protects it. Its Song-dynasty statue of Laozi, cut from a single boulder, is the largest Taoist stone carving in the country.

   Cao'an

   The only Manichaean temple left standing anywhere in the world. The stone image of Mani carved into its rear wall dates from 1339; later worshippers took him for a Buddha, which is the accident by which the building survived at all.

   A Buddhist temple in the Licheng district of Quanzhou in Fujian. With Kaiyuan and Chongfu it is counted among the three great temples of the city.

   Quanzhou Overseas Relations Museum

   A museum in the Fengze district of Quanzhou, the only one in China devoted to overseas relations. Founded in 1959, it sets out the traces of Zayton, the great eastern port of the medieval world, and the part Quanzhou played in foreign trade and cultural exchange.
