Jiuzhaigou is a valley of lakes so clear and so mineral-blue that photographs of it are routinely disbelieved. Travertine dams step the water down in terraces between forest and snow peaks.

An earthquake in 2017 closed it for a time and some lakes changed shape. Huanglong, over the pass, has calcite pools of its own above three thousand metres. Late October, when the leaves turn, is the peak of the year.

    Jiuzhaigou Valley

    A valley of terraced lakes in northern Sichuan whose water is so clear and so charged with calcium carbonate that photographs of it are routinely assumed to be manipulated. Fallen trunks are visible metres down. World Heritage since 1992; the Tibetan villages that give it its name are still inhabited.

    Pearl Shoal Waterfall

    A waterfall in Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan. It lies at 2,433 metres, is 310 metres wide at the lip, and drops forty metres.
