Kashgar is the westernmost city in China and was the point where the northern and southern silk roads met again after skirting the Taklamakan. It is closer to Kabul than to Beijing.

The Id Kah mosque, founded in 1442, is the largest in the country. The Sunday livestock market still trades sheep and donkeys by handshake. The Karakoram Highway runs south to Karakul lake, under Muztagh Ata at 7,546 metres.

    Id Kah Mosque

    A fifteenth-century mosque at Kashgar which, counting the courtyard, can hold twenty thousand at prayer — the largest in China.

    Afaq Khoja Mausoleum

    A tiled mausoleum five kilometres northeast of Kashgar, built in the 1640s and holding several generations of a Sufi family. It is the holiest Muslim site in Xinjiang, and tradition places the Fragrant Concubine among its dead.

    People's Park

    A park of twenty-four hectares in central Kashgar in Xinjiang, south of People's Square. It is among the largest in the city and a favourite place of rest for its residents.
