Sihanoukville is Cambodia's port and has changed beyond recognition in the last decade under casino construction; the reason to come is the islands offshore.

Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem are forty minutes out by fast boat and still run on bungalows and generators. Plankton in some bays glow when disturbed at night. Phnom Penh is four hours away by road.

    Ream National Park

    A national park declared in 1993 eighteen kilometres from Sihanoukville, taking in mangrove, estuary, beach and reef in one protected area. Parts of it have been given over to development, which has been contested.

    Kbal Chhay Waterfall

    A waterfall in the hills behind Sihanoukville that supplied the town's water until 1963, then became a Khmer Rouge hideout and was cut off. A road was pushed through in 1998 and it is now a weekend resort.

    St. Michael's Church, Sihanoukville

    The only Catholic church in Sihanoukville, built in the 1960s and one of the few in Cambodia to survive the Khmer Rouge, who destroyed most church buildings and killed most of the clergy.
