Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou, a province of karst hills, waterfalls and minority villages that most visitors to China still skip.

Huangguoshu, two hours west, is among the largest waterfalls in Asia and has a cave passage running behind the curtain of it. Qingyan is a walled Ming garrison town, and the Miao village at Xijiang is the largest of its kind, a thousand wooden houses on one hillside.

    Hongfu Temple

    A Buddhist temple of 1672 on Qianling mountain above Guiyang, reached by a stone path through macaque-filled woods. The monkeys are unafraid and will take food out of a bag, which the signs warn about and nobody heeds.

    Qianming Temple

    A Buddhist temple in Nanming district rebuilt in 1771 on the bank of the Nanming river, and counted among the country's key Han Buddhist temples. Its halls stand tight among the streets of central Guiyang.

    St. Joseph's Cathedral

    The cathedral of the Guiyang archdiocese, built in the 1870s in a mixture of Chinese and Western forms, with a stone front beneath a Chinese tiled roof. It came through the closures of the 20th century and reopened for worship in the 1980s.
